Loop Code for Closed-Loop Insulet Pump System Released

Diabetes tech early adopters now have the option to test-drive the Loop algorithm with something other than a discontinued Medtronic insulin pump.

In late April, Pete Schwamb, the developer of the do-it-yourself RileyLink closed-loop insulin pump technology, announced that he and others successfully reverse-engineered Insulet’s Omnipod Eros Pod pump system to work with Loop technology through RileyLink. He released the code to allow others the opportunity to test it, but with the caveat that this is a beta version of the code, and it would need more refinement before becoming part of the standard Loop code offerings.

This code, which has not been approved by the FDA, is another advancement in the #WeAreNotWaiting movement, in which engineers and coders within the type 1 diabetes community create their own algorithms based on security flaws in older pump and CGM technology to create closed-loop insulin pump systems.

This project is separate from Tidepool’s own project to develop an automated insulin pump system utilizing Loop technology. That project involves the newer Omnipod Dash pump system, and the goal is to seek FDA approval for the pump system. Insulet is not involved in the RileyLink project.

This project comes shortly before the publication of an article in The Atlantic which discussed the #WeAreNotWaiting movement, and how it was dependent on the security flaws of several discontinued models of Medtronic insulin pumps. If live testing of the RileyLink code for the Omnipod system is successful, people with type 1 diabetes will have another option for pump systems to hack. Also, unlike the Medtronic models, this pump system will be tubeless.
